Welcome to the Northeast Genesis Relief Team!  We are excited to have a team of people with whom we can trust the Lord to use in bringing aid to the hurricane victims in New Orleans

 

Attention:  If you don’t have time to read this email right now PLEASE take a minute to check the “Transportation” section to see that I am buying the correct people tickets!  If your name is missing or shouldn’t be there…please email me immediately!  Thanks.

 

Please take the time (10 minutes) to carefully read through this email which includes important information for the trip and specific actions you need to take with in the next week and before we leave.   

 

Here is a list of action points that will be further explained as you continue reading.

-        Print, fill out, and sign legal forms. Mail to Jarrod before Dec. 25th

-        Register online before December 25th

-        Email Jarrod.lynn@uscm.org your desired t-shirt size ASAP (by Dec. 20th) and 2 or 3 of your favorite snacks.

-        Thank your donors!

-        Buy supplies and pack (lightly) for the trip.

-        Pray!

 

Things to do before December 25th:

-        Print and fill out required legal forms.  They can be found at http://uscm.org/katrina/PDF's/application_packet_katrinat.pdf or in the attachment to this email.

-        Mail completed and signed legal forms to Jarrod Lynn at 168 Lloyd Avenue Providence, RI 02906 by December 25th.

-        We will be buying relief worker t-shirts.  Please Email Jarrod.lynn@uscm.org your desired t-shirt size ASAP.  He will order you a large if he doesn’t hear from you by the 20th.

-        Send a thank you to anyone who has given through prayer or finances!

 

Things to Bring to with you:

-        bring the remaining financial balance in check/s made payable to Campus Crusade for Christ.  If we bought you a plane ticket…the total cost will be $400.  If we didn’t buy you a plane ticket than your deposit of $100 is all you need to have given.  Staff, I will be removing the amount from your accounts some time in January.  Questions about money?  Contact brodie.herb@uscm.org.

-        one piece of luggage and a carry on.  We may ask some of you to bring another empty bag that we can fill with supplies (work or outreach).  (Packing list follows.)

-        The following is cheesy..I realize…but an optimistic and flexible attitude!  From the website… “Bring a flexible, prayerful and positive attitude. You may find yourself doing manual labor, serving the needy, distributing food and supplies to other workers, and ministering to a variety of people from a variety of walks of life. God will use you, be ready!”

 

Packing List:

-  bedding – sleeping bag and/or sheets and blankets…we will be sleeping in a tent and it will be chilly

-  long-leg and long-sleeve work clothes

-  shorts and short – sleeve work clothes  Ladies:  only bring shorts that come as close to the knee as possible, 

    no shorter than mid-thigh

-  comfortable lounging clothes – we will have some time at night to just hang out

-  one nice casual outfit in case we go out in New Orleans one night

-  comfortable shoes…you may also want to bring a pair of boots in case we do some demolition work

-  modest and warm sleepwear

-  rain jacket

-  sun glasses

-  hats, winter and broad-brim to protect you from the sun

-  bug spray, sun-block, hand sanitizer

-  toiletries, towel

-  allergy/asthma medication

-  Tylenol, Advil, any medications you take regularly

-  identification and medical insurance information

-  cell phone

-  work gloves

-  safety goggles

-  Bible and notebook, other books to read,

-  money for food while traveling/fun in New Orleans

-  Optional:  small games (for our time hanging out at night), books, walkie talkies, extension cords, donations of men’s and children’s clothing

 

Weather: 

            The average temperature for the beginning of January is the high 50’s low 60’s…the records range from 10’s to 80’s so be prepared for any type of weather.  Think layers and versatile clothing!

 

Schedule:

            Breakfast will be at a different location.  We will leave at 7:15 for breakfast…back at 8:30.  9 – 9:30 devotion by the Pastor of the partnering church.  Followed by orientation to the day.  Leave for your site.  Lunch 11-1, back around 5 or 6, dinner is 5-7.  Time for showers and free time.  Meet around 8 for to process and play.  This is what we have been told but please be flexible…it very well may look different by then.

 

Type of Work we will be doing:

You and your team will serve at distribution centers, deliver food to homes as well as clean homes, churches and schools. You will offer emotional and spiritual encouragement to residents who must rebuild their lives. As a way to share the hope of the gospel and to initiate spiritual conversations, you will be giving away the evangelistic piece, “Higher Ground.”

 

Sleeping Arrangements:

         We will be sleeping on cots in a tent.  There will be heaters but this will still be outside so be prepared for cool nights.

 

Transportation:

            We will be traveling with Northwest Airlines.  Leaving Boston at 11:57 (flight # 385), lay over in Detroit, then arriving in New Orleans at 4:49 (flight #1479).  Once arriving in New Orleans we will take rental cars from the airport to the ministry site and have them for the week.   For those going to BWC we will arrange transport from the hotel to the airport.

            We will leave New Orleans at 11:30 (flight # 292), lay over in Memphis, the arrive in Boston (flight # 5736) at 6:30pm.  Please arrange for someone to pick you up or a means of getting home.

            These tickets are currently reserved.  If anything changes I will let you know.  I am buying roundtrip tickets for Jarrod, Tim, Liz, Megan, Achai, Meredith, Todd, Jennie, Amie, Stephanie, and Tonya.  I am buying a one way ticket to New Orleans for Susan.  Please let me know ASAP if any of this is a mistake.  Thanks. 

 

Boston Winter Conference Attendees:

Plan on having at least one time that we will meet together to talk about the details of the trip and pray. Also, please plan on leaving your unneeded luggage (clothes from BWC) with a friend at BWC.  We will not be able to take or store any excess luggage.  Keep what you pack to a minimum.  We will probably be leaving around 8:00 on that Thursday morning.  Staff, that means we will miss the last staff meeting that is taking place that morning.  Please make your campus directors aware.

Meeting us at New Orleans International Airport:

         You must be at the New Orleans International Airport by 5:30pm on January 5th.  Lets plan on meeting at the baggage carousel for Air Tran flight….that we will be arriving on.
