Jesus in the Old Testament Speaker Series

    JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
    A six-part speaking series

To many people, the Old Testament is that part of the Bible that seems superfluous: a lot of archaic laws about dietary restrictions and stories of long extinct tribes fighting each other.  Richard Dawkins famously said that “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction… a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal… sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”  Stereotypes aside, a contextual reading of the Old Testament actually shows how revolutionary God’s Word is compared to its surrounding cultures.  And more importantly, a fuller knowledge of the Old Testament unveils the incredibly consistent story of God’s plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.  This six-part series will develop an understanding of why the Old Testament is as relevant today as it’s ever been.  The talks will include language analysis, geographical studies, and archeological supports to create as full a historical picture as possible.  Both Christians and Non-Christians are invited to learn together, to find out why the Bible is considered the most important book ever written.
    1. WEEK 1 (10/15) – CREATION: An Evolution in Cosmology
    2. WEEK 2 (10/22) – COVENANT: Abraham and the Patriarchs
    3. WEEK 3 (11/04) – CONSECRATION: Moses and Becoming God’s People
    4. WEEK 4 (11/18) – CROWNS: The Rise and Fall of Israel
    5. WEEK 5 (12/02) – COMMITMENT: The Prophets and Wisdom Literature
    6. WEEK 6 (12/9) – CURSE: Exile and a Kingdom No More
About the Speaker: Scott Yi ‘05 is a pastoral intern at Renaissance Church and currently attends Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary specializing in Urban Ministry.
